Mission and Values Statement - January 2021

My mission is to help each person I meet to better understand themselves - their needs and difficulties, their strengths and resources, their relationships, and their hopes and dreams - so as to be able to move on with their lives in more meaningful, rewarding and hopeful ways.

I consider it an honour to have witnessed and supported many people over the years to summon the courage and bring about remarkable changes in their lives, and it is my hope that they continue to grow well beyond our work together.

While I value individual autonomy (and individual therapy), as I approach the 30 year mark of my career, I have become more appreciative of the ‘web of life’ in which we all live, the profound interconnectedness of all things. We cannot - at least for very long - live, let alone thrive, in isolation. We all need family, friends and community. Further still, we are all inextricably embedded in the biosphere, breathing in and out the same air, drinking the same water, as all other forms of life. I believe we can live our healthiest lives together by recognizing and embracing all of these connections.

As I enter a new chapter in my practice by offering guided forest therapy walks, I am increasingly concerned with, and committed to working and living in ways that are more sustainable and helpful for ourselves and our precious planet. It is my aspiration to help people who join me on my walks to deepen in their appreciation of, and connection with the other-than-human world.

Lastly, as a small way to honour these values, I commit at least 1% of my net earnings to non-profit organizations that address environmental issues through research, advocacy, habitat preservation and carbon-offset initiatives.
